Free firewood - big oak down off Salem Road

Passing this along for a friend of mine who has a lot out off Salem Road. That storm last week took down a big oak, a really old one, probably been standing there longer than the road has been paved. Nobody got hurt and it missed the house thank goodness but it's laying there across the back of the lot and she wants it gone.

So it's free to anybody who wants it. You cut it up and haul it off, that's the deal. She can't do any of it herself and doesn't want to pay somebody to take it. There's a lot of wood on it, I'd guess several cords once it's split, and it should season good by fall.

A couple things I don't know. Does anybody have a trailer they'd be willing to bring, or know somebody who hauls for a little gas money? And does the city pick up the limbs and brush or is that on her? I thought they took limbs at the curb but I don't know if that covers something this size. Maybe someone here has dealt with it.

Please only come if you have your own saw and know how to run it, I don't want anybody getting hurt on her property. Reply here and I'll get you in touch with her.

Good wood, oak like that will burn all winter. Call the city sanitation department about the limbs. I think curbside pickup has a size limit, so a whole tree probably won't qualify, but they can tell you.

For anyone who replies: own saw, and bring a second person. Chaps and eye protection too.

Thanks Austin, I'll tell her to call sanitation Monday and ask about the size limit. I figured a whole tree was probably pushing it but worth asking. If they won't take the big limbs she may just have to pile them back by the fence for whoever's cutting.

Good point on the second person and the chaps, I'll put that in when I'm passing names along. She's already nervous about strangers on the lot so I'd rather it be folks who know what they're doing.

My husband always said that oak was there before the Salem Road was anything but dirt, so I'd hate for it all to just get chipped. Somebody ought to get a good winter out of it.
