Saw that Game and Fish is going to close the gates on the new water-control structure Dec 2 and start refilling Lake Conway. They're saying about a month to fill. Around 170 people showed up at Mayflower High School for the update, which is a lot for a Tuesday night meeting about a lake.
From what I read, the drought kept the lake so dry that some of the work couldn't get finished. So the dry weather cost them time on top of everything else. They've already put in 200,000 golden shiners, with gamefish coming later. Catch-and-release looks like fall 2028 and harvest isn't until summer 2030. That's a long wait. My boys were little the last time we had a line in that water, and the oldest will be out of high school by the time we can keep a fish.
I know it's the right call if they want it to come back healthy, but five more years is still hard to hear. Did anyone get to go to the meeting? Curious if they said anything about boat ramps or when the lake will be open for kayaks and such before the fishing opens up. Also wondering how the water level looks right now out by Mayflower compared to the Conway side.
